Tuesdays Are Back in Blue Hill Public Library’s Reader Dog Program

Blue Hill, Maine - Tuesdays are back in the lineup for the Blue Hill Public Library’s “Reader Dog” program, which goes to mid-April before stopping for the summer. Kids ages 5 and older can now sign up for 20 minute slots on Tuesdays, March 24th and April 7th from 3:10 to 4:40 PM, and Saturdays, March 21st, and April 4th and 18th, from 10:30 AM to noon.

The reader dogs are two lovely golden retrievers named Bixby and Keebler, and a sweet greyhound named Rumble, all registered therapy dogs who enjoy listening to children read. The children read in a relaxed and nonjudgmental environment so that they may gain self-confidence.  This is not a drop-in program—children may sign up for 20 minute slots ahead of time with Pat. Exhibit: Animal Sculptures

Deer Isle artist and art instructor Frederica Marshall is displaying her collection of animal sculptures from around the world in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Larchwood Room display cases for the months of March and April.  The exhibit includes wood, straw, clay, metal and stone creatures. The collection demonstrates how different cultures create very different interpretations of the same animal, and also many ways artists have portrayed the creatures of nature.

Children ages 5 to 10 are invited to a workshop on Saturday April 4th at 2:00 PM, with Frederica where she will tell stories about how and where she obtained the various sculptures. Kids will explore the sculptures of Frederica's collection and then work with modeling clay to create their own animal sculptures to take home.

Frederica Marshall traveled the world as the child of a military officer and then also later as an adult.  She is a master brush painter, artist, teacher and researcher and teaches sumi-e and watercolor classes at her studio in Deer Isle, at educational institutions on Florida's gulf coast and in the Republic of China. The exhibit will be available for viewing during regular Library hours. For more information call Pat at 374-5515.
