University of Maine System starts fall semester with 25,000+ students

Maine’s public universities have grown enrollment for six consecutive semesters, defying demographics thanks to affordability, admission and academic innovations, relevant programming and a proven value proposition

ORONO, Maine — More than 25,000 students will advance their career readiness and upward mobility through Maine’s public universities this fall.

While an official count of students will not take place until October, the University of Maine System (UMS) is on track for its sixth consecutive semester of year-over-year enrollment growth, defying demographic trends (External Site) in the Northeast.

Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement today in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day:

Maine - "Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those we've lost, we comfort their friends and families, and we refuse to relent in our work to prevent substance use from claiming the lives of more Maine people," said Governor Janet Mills. "While we welcome the continued drop in overdose deaths, we know we can't be complacent. Together, we must continue supporting people as they walk the path of recovery and respond to the evolving opioid epidemic."

Lauren Slattery, MD, Joins MaineHealth Surgical Care Belfast

Dr. Slattery joins MHWH after completing an endocrine surgery fellowship at Columbia University’s Department of General Surgery in New York City. Prior to that, she completed her residency as a general surgery physician at the University of Utah’s Department of General Surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Slattery earned her medical degree from the University of Queensland School of Medicine-Ochsner Clinical School in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and New Orleans, LA. She holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Utah and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, with minors in math/computer science and music.

Border Patrol Agents Arrest Confirmed Gang Member in Maine

UNION, Maine — U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a Colombian national and confirmed member of the South American Theft Group (SATG) in Union, Maine, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The individual was found to be illegally present in the United States.

Upon further investigation, records revealed the individual had an active warrant from New Jersey for burglary. The subject had previously been apprehended for illegal entry by Border Patrol agents in El Paso, Texas, in June 2022 and processed for expedited removal. Additionally, the individual was flagged as a potential national security threat and confirmed as a member of the South American Theft Group, which engages in transnational organized crime. The subject is currently being transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) for detention.
