Portland Public Library seeks submissions for the “Edible Book Festival” to be on exhibit for First Friday Art Walk

Friday, April 3rd from 5:00-8:00pm
Registration and drop off for “books” is from 3:00-4:00pm
Portland, Maine - The Portland Public Library announces this year’s Edible Book Festival where community members and library patrons are invited to create a piece of edible art referencing a book or poem.   Edible art submissions can look like a book or poem, pun on a title of a book or poem, resemble a character or scene or just have something to do with a book or poem. The only major criteria are that all submissions must be edible and based on a book or poem!

Children’s books, mystery novels, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, short stories, poetry, even cookbooks will be on display and created from all types of food--from veggies to colorful frosting and everything in between.  Winners in recent years include The Stinky Cheese Man constructed out of different types of cheese, and The Gingerbread Man created from gingerbread, ribbon candy, Necco wafers and frosting, and The Life of Pi made out of the various ingredients found in apple pie.

The Edible Book Festival will be held during the First Friday Art Walk in the Atrium at the Portland Public Library on April 3rd.  Edible books will be on exhibit from 5:00-7:00pm where members of the public can vote for their favorite.  People’s Choice Awards will be presented at 7:00pm sharp to allow time for the best part…participants and members of the public are invited to dig in and taste each work of art.

The Edible Book Festival will be held in conjunction with a book arts show in the Lewis Gallery titled “Bound Together II” an exhibition of books made by USM art students and USM Kate Cheney Chapel ’83 Center for Book Arts critique group members.

Participants are encouraged to register for the Edible Book Festival by emailing Chance@portlandpubliclibrary.org or by calling Harper Chance at 871-1700 ext. 756.  Registration is free and participants are asked to drop off their work of art between 4:00pm-5:00pm on Friday, April 3rd.
