Rockland, Maine - According to Rockland Fire Department press release on Monday, November 19th, 2018, Rockland Fire & EMS, along with our mutual aid companies, responded to Fisher Engineering on Gordon Drive for an automatic fire alarm indicating sprinkler flow. Upon arrival, workers had evacuated the plant and our members were met by plant supervisors who reported there was a fire in the shot blaster dust collector. Investigation indicated a fire confined to the dust collector however due to the size and occupancy of building, a first alarm was struck. When the crews made entry they confirmed the fire was confined to the dust collector. Extinguishment was completed by firefighters removing 24 filters and extinguishing them individually. Smoke did travel throughout the large facility but damage was confined to the dust collector.
Cause was overheating in the Shot Blaster Dust Collection System.
Due to responding with just 4 on duty personnel, and the size and type of building were factors leading to the need for additional personnel early and before making entry to the fire area. Once again our mutual aid partners responded quickly and efficiently.
Twenty eight personnel responded.
Towns called to the scene besides Rockland were Rockport FD and Camden FD, Thomaston FD.
