Portland Board of Public Education Inauguration Set for December 4

In addition to swearing in new and re-elected members, the board will formally vote to elect a new chairperson for the coming year. 

PORTLAND, Maine – The Portland Board of Public Education will hold a ceremony to inaugurate its newest members on Monday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. in the Portland City Council Chambers at Portland City Hall.

Sworn in will be one board member who was re-elected in the Nov. 7 election: District 5 Representative Marnie Morrione, who will be serving her fourth term. Also inaugurated will be two board newcomers: Timothy Atkinson, who won the District 4 seat; and Mark Balfantz, who won an at-large school board seat. School board members’ terms run for three years.

Also sworn in will be student representatives to the board: Tiana Urey, representing Casco Bay High School; Saharla Farah, representing Deering High School; and Jack Sweeney, representing the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS). The Portland High School student representative has yet to be announced.

An official vote for school board chair also will take place at the inauguration.
