Maritime Month Begins at the Camden Public Library

The library’s annual Maritime Month speaker series kicks off on Tuesday evening, April 4, with a gallery talk by Jeff Dworsky on “A Way of Life: The Fishing Families of Stonington.”

Other events in the series include a slide talk on Greenland from noted photographer Peter Ralston on Tuesday, April 11, at 7:00 pm. Ralston says, “I am pleased and honored to be able to share my observations from this transformative trip.”

On Thursday, April 13, at 7:00 pm, the library will again host a panel of schooner captains to talk about the business of sailing and their love of being out on the bay. The Schooner Captains presentation has proved very popular in the past!

On Tuesday, April 18, at 7:00 pm, geologist Steve Norton will discuss the evolution of the bedrock geology that forms the underpinnings of the area, the glacial history that has reshaped our coastal area, and modern processes that influence human activity and vice versa. Steve Norton taught geology at the University of Maine, and his talk is part of the speaker series hosted by Coastal Mountains Land Trust on how to read the natural landscape.

Bigelow Labs will bring Dr. José Antonio Fernández-Robledo to speak at the library on Tuesday, April 25, at 7:00 pm, as part of their exciting Cafe Sci series. Fernández-Robledo will speak on “Science on the Half Shell: How Oyster Parasites Might Benefit Human Health.” Refreshments will be served, and a question session will follow the presentation.

The final event in the series is a presentation by Camden’s Philosophical Society, a film and discussion on “Moby Dick"and"The Old Man and the Sea” on Thursday, April 27, at 7:00 pm. All are welcome.
