Lincoln Middle School Students To Perform Pop-Up MacBeth!

PORTLAND, Maine – Lincoln Middle School students will participate in Pop-Up MacBeth performances March 3 and 4. The Lincoln sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade performers are the only school-age performers participating in the PortFringe theatrical event.

PortFringe is a by-lottery, non-juried fringe theater festival. The Lincoln group, called the Froward Dewberry Mammets, was selected in a lottery along with 13 other groups and each group was assigned a scene from MacBeth to be performed in chronological order. Lincoln English Language Arts teacher Michelle Amato revised the original scene and students brainstormed their unique approach to fit their vision of the way MacBeth should be told.

The only rules are that the segment must include one line of original dialogue and must be performed in less than 10 minutes. Beyond that, students must be ready to be as creative, flexible, and innovative as possible to overcome any technical challenges, true to the “pop-up” nature of the performance.

To give a sense of the range of Shakespearean interpretations possible, PortFringe’s Pop-Up Hamlet last year included clowning, radio interviews, shadow puppetry, rapping, Dungeons & Dragons, and contemplations on cheese.

Pop-Up MacBeth is being performed this weekend beginning Friday, March 3, during Portland's First Friday Art Walk. Scenes from Pop-Up Macbeth will be performed in various spots along the Art Walk. The Lincoln Middle School group can be seen at the Think Tank CoWorking facility at 533 Congress St. from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at no cost.

Pop-Up MacBeth will be performed in full on Saturday, March 4,  at Oxbow Blending and Bottling,  49  Washington Avenue, at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at
