Lichens of Mount Battie

Naturalist Diann Henderson will speak at the Camden Public Library about common lichens that can be found on the Mt. Battie Road on Thursday March 23 at 7:00.

Henderson says, "What is lichen? Where and how do they grow? What is their role in the environment? There will be a PowerPoint as well as hands on samples of lichens to learn from. Bring a hand lens if you have one". 

Henderson will also lead a "Mt. Battie Road Lichen Field trip" on Friday March 24, 9 to 11 am, rain or shine. "Meet at the Camden Hills State Park parking lot at 8:45 am. Wear appropriate clothing to walk in the woods, a rain coat and boots if needed. A notebook, pen and hand lens will be useful. Our goal will be to identify the three categories of lichens (foliose, fruticose and crustose), to identify the reproductive soredia and isidia, and to identify some of the common lichens found there". The field trip is not a library event. 

Diann Henderson is a retired Middle School Math and Science teacher and graduate of the Maine Master Naturalist Program. She has had a love of Mt Battie ever since growing up by the State Park, well before the road to the top was constructed.
