Portland, Maine - Portland Public Library hosts a plethora of events for December’s First Friday Art Walk. Join us for a performance by Portland Ballet Company; an opening of Southern Maine Community College Printmaking student work on the Lower Level; a talk by local wine enthusiast, Layne Witherell; and a closing reception for Material Matters in the Lewis Gallery.
What you need to know about buying wine for the holidays!
Rines Auditorium, 5:30-6:30pm
Layne Witherell, local wine expert and author of Wine Maniacs: Life in the Wine Biz., will be giving a short lecture on buying wine for the holidays in conjunction with First Friday Art Walk from 5:30-6:30pm in the Rines Auditorium. Come and learn some tips about wine pairing and how to find some good deals!
Southern Maine Community College - Student Work exhibition
Lower Level Hall, 5:00-8:00pm
Southern Maine Community College students in Michel Droge's "Drawing I" and "Intro to Print" classes present their self-portraits in charcoal and relief prints in the Lower Level hall and Cultural Center. Work will be on view through January.
Material Matters
Lewis Gallery – Closing reception, 5:00-8:00pm
Eighteen artists from the Greater New England Area exhibit their work at the Portland Public Library’s Lewis Gallery. The exhibition highlights the versatility of this molten wax medium. By incorporating metal, fabric or both materials into their work with the encaustic medium, these artists have challenged themselves to explore new techniques for expressing their diverse artistic visions.
Portland Ballet - Excerpts from "The Victorian Nutcracker"
Atrium at PPL to be viewed from Monument Square, 6:30pm
Portland Ballet Company will present excerpts from The Victorian Nutcracker, which will be performed at Merrill Auditorium on Dec 18, and at WPAC on Dec 21. Also featured is La Vie en Rose, new choreography by Roberto Forleo, featuring 3 women looking for love, dancing with their dream.
