City of Portland Extends Opportunity for the Public to Provide Capital Improvement Plan Suggestions to December 2, 2013

Public can continue to submit their suggestions online

Portland, Maine – The City of Portland is continuing to seek public input for capital improvement needs and has extended the deadline to December 2, 2013 for next year’s Capital Improvement Plan. The public is invited to fill out a short online form with their suggestions or ideas for a project that would benefit the community. Public input from past years was used to identify potential capital projects.   The form can be accessed online at:

http://www.portlandmaine.gov/citymanagers/cip.asp#Purpose

The CIP is a five year financing and construction and acquisition plan for city and school projects that require significant capital investment. The CIP represents a balance between maintaining the city’s existing assets and investing in new assets to support Portland’s growth while ensuring that investments are made in line with the community’s priorities. The CIP outlines priorities for investment in long-term assets like roads, sewers, community facilities and technology.  Common CIP projects include new or improved sidewalks, roads, vehicles and new facilities such as schools. The CIP is updated annually and submitted to and adopted by the City Council.

The development of the five-year CIP reflects Government Financial Officer Association (GFOA) best practices for multi‐year capital planning and asset assessment, maintenance, and replacement. Capital improvements projects consist of purchasing, constructing or renovating structures, acquiring land and purchasing major equipment or vehicles that have a total cost of more than $10,000.
