Film & Discussion: Montaigne on Self-Esteem November 21

Rockland, Maine - On Thursday, November 21, at 6:30 pm Rockland Public Library will screen Montaigne on Self-Esteem, part 4 of the Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness series.  This 24 minute film looks at the problem of self-esteem from the perspective of Michel de Montaigne (16th Century), the French philosopher who singled out three main reasons for feeling bad about oneself – sexual inadequacy, failure to live up to social norms, and intellectual inferiority – and then offered practical solutions for overcoming them.  A discussion will follow the film, led by Richard Fortuna, URock student and honors program vice president.

The Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness series features thinkers who have influenced history, and their ideas about the pursuit of happiness.  This program is one in a continuing Thursday series of literary, film and cultural offerings sponsored by Rockland Public Library and the Friends of the Rockland Public Library.  The Friends Community Room is located in the lower level of the library.  Admission is free.  Views expressed in public programs at the library do not necessarily reflect the views of the Rockland Public Library or its staff.  Special accommodations for persons with disabilities can be made with 48 hours’ notice.  Rockland Public Library is located at 80 Union St. in Rockland.  For more information, please call the library at 207-594-0310.
