ROCKLAND, MAINE— Midcoast roller derby league the Rock Coast Rollers is proud to announce it will host its second annual Coastal Chaos Tournament from May 6–8 at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association-sanctioned tournament is the only one of its kind in the state of Maine.
"Maine's evolution from one roller derby league to nine statewide over the past six years is an illustration of the recent explosion of roller derby as the fastest-growing sport in the nation," says Rock Coast Rollers President Manette "Mad Madam Mim" Pottle.
"In our second year of Coastal Chaos, we’re thrilled to host Bangor Roller Derby as Maine’s third and newest WFTDA member league, playing their first WFTDA-sanctioned games at the Tournament in May. We’re also delighted once again to bring six of our favorite teams to Maine from as far away as New Jersey and Virginia. For fans of roller derby throughout Maine and beyond, this will be the event of the season."
Eight teams will compete for the championship title. Reigning champs Granite State Roller Derby will return for another year, joining other veteran Coastal Chaos teams Bay State Brawlers, Fredericksburg Roller Derby (formerly Five40 Roller Girls), Shore Points Roller Derby and host team Rock Coast Rollers. First time participants include New Hampshire Roller Derby, Mass Attack Roller Derby, and Bangor Roller Derby.
For Virginia-based Fredericksburg Roller Derby, the inaugural Coastal Chaos is a highlight of the travel season.
"Last year's tournament was an awesome opportunity for our league to travel and play teams we would not normally get the chance to play against due to distance," says Fredericksburg skater Kylie "Thin Mint" Loomis. “We can't wait to see what this year's tournament brings."
For referees and non-skating officials, the tournament offers a chance to perfect officiating skills and learn from other highly experienced officials. CJ "Goldie Gloves" Goldie, a skater for Mass Attack Roller Derby who served as a non-skating official at last year's tournament, says the event provides a good mix of inspiration and challenges. “I had a great time, learned a ton, made new derby connections," she says.
While last year’s tournament structure featured a double-elimination bracket, this year will feature a seeded consolation bracket, which ensures that each team plays three games, regardless of wins or losses. The tournament will consist of 13 games total: three WFTDA-sanctioned games on Friday afternoon and evening, five sanctioned games on Saturday, and four sanctioned games on Sunday, with one additional exhibition game on Saturday featuring two teams not participating in the tournament itself (schedule subject to change).
“Coastal Chaos 2015 was a great inaugural tournament for everyone involved,” says last year's tournament Head Referee TestosteRon Jeremy of Boston Roller Derby. “I truly hope it becomes a staple in the New England derby calendar.”
