Eagles lose to Simpson and Defiance, 3-0, 4-0

Kissimmee, Fla. – Husson softball team dropped a pair of games to Simpson College and Defiance College on Monday morning. The Strom defeated the Eagles by a score of 3-0 and the lost to the Yellow Jackets 4-0 on day two of their spring trip.

Game 1: Simpson 3, Husson 0

Rachel Guessford homered in the fourth, driving in all three Simpson runs and Tori Haag finished with three hits and a double. Riley Fisher (6-0) remained perfect on the year after going the distance with seven strikeouts.

Casey Lopes led the Eagles with two hits while Lyndsay Merrill and Alannah Healy each added one
hit to the Husson offense. Healy (1-1) pitched seven innings allowing three runs (all earned) on 10 hits while record one strikeout.

Game 2: Defiance 4, Husson 0

All of the runs scored in the game came in the first two innings with Defiance (1-2) crossing the plate twice in each frame.  The Yellow Jackets scored their first two runs on back-to-back RBI-doubles by sophomore Kaity Kuhn and junior Megan Warren in the bottom of the first inning.

Defiance padded its lead in the second that included another RBI-double by Kuhn to extend the margin to 4-0.  Husson (1-3) had two excellent scoring chances in the fifth and sixth innings with multiple runners on base and included having the bases loaded in the fifth, but pitcher Sarah Kaya held the Eagles scoreless throughout, preserving the 4-0 shutout.

The Jackets tallied nine hits against Husson led by a trio of players with two hits. Emily Denhard finished a perfect two-for-two.  Kuhn and Jordan Osborne both went two-of-three with Kuhn scoring a run and two RBI, while Osborne scored a pair of runs.  Warren finished the game one-of-three overall to go along with her RBI.

Kaya pitched a complete game to claim her first win of the season and improved to 1-1 overall.  She allowed no runs on five hits and had three strikeouts.

Merrill and Mallory Conary led the Eagles with two hits while Kristen Chipman and Alice Kennedy added one hit apiece. Conary was perfect at the plate going two-for-two while recording her first stolen base of the season.

Olivia Maynard picked up the lost after allowing six hits and four runs (two earned) over three innings of work. Olivia Smith pitched three innings of shutout relief.

Simpson gets a day off Tuesday before returning to action against Farmingdale State and Montclair State on Wednesday. Defiance is back in Tuesday with a pair of games beginning with a matchup against Baldwin Wallace University at 9 a.m. and Widener University at 11:15 a.m. in Kissimmee, Fla. The Eagles return to the diamond on Tuesday when they face Bluffton University at 11 a.m. and Bridgewater (Va.) University at 1:30 p.m. in Kissimmee, Fla.
