Opening Reception May 1
Rockport, Maine - Highways & Byways, an exhibition of images by 19 contemporary photographers, opens with a reception on Friday, May 1, in the Lewis Gallery of the Portland Public Library, located at 5 Monument Square. The reception runs from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The exhibition is sponsored by the Center for Maine Contemporary art and curated by CMCA curator emeritus Bruce Brown, and is the fourth to be selected by the Portland Public Library for presentation in the Lewis Gallery.
Highways & Byways is organized in conjunction with the Maine Photo Project, a year-long celebration of photography exhibitions across the state. It features the work of Jeremy Barnard, Thomas Birtwistle, Brendan Bullock, Sam Cady, Paul Caponigro, Susan Davens, Jon Edwards, Carol Fonde, Tonee Harbert, Cig Harvey, Michael Kolster, Rose Marasco, Mark Marchesi, Heath Paley, Liv Kristin Robinson, Jeffrey Stevensen, Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest, Todd Watts, and Katarina Weslien.
"Networks of highways and byways are very likely the most useful means for all of us, with cameras in hand, to explore and record both immediate, familiar environs and exotic destinations around the world," says curator Bruce Brown. "Roadways lead us nearly everywhere we wish to go to capture our aesthetic responses about what fascinates us most along life's journey, preserved as visual diaries."
The exhibition is on view through May 30. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
CMCA is grateful for the generous support of major media sponsor Maine Home + Design magazine. The Center for Maine Contemporary Art is a nonprofit organization advancing contemporary art in Maine through exhibitions and educational programs. For more information, visit cmcanow.org.
