Augusta, Maine - Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Historic Landmark fort, store, and house museum on the Kennebec River in downtown Augusta, will host its 22nd annual Maple Syrup Day, Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 1-4 p.m. Come join us, relax and step into the past with the smells and tastes of the 18th century.
During our maple syrup demonstrations, we will whittle spiles, tap trees, collect and boil sap over an open fire. Inside our kitchen there will be a demonstration of Journey Cake baking over an open hearth. In the parlor, watch as maple syrup is transformed into maple sugar, a staple sweetener of the 18th century. Maple Syrup vendor, Eric Turcott of Sweet Ariana’s will have maple syrup and maple syrup products available to taste and purchase.
Afterwards, come inside the Learning Gallery on the first floor of City Center and watch as artefacts are processed from the Fort Richmond archeological site. Learn about the Palisade Replacement Project and plans for the future Center for Study of Kennebec River Forts.
Admission is always free on Maple Syrup Day and donations are always welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Old Fort Western Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching, preserving and discovering local history in the Kennebec Valley since 1922.
