The natural gas leak closed Congress St in Portland
Portland, Maine - Portland Fire Department personnel responded to the area of Congress Street and North Street in Portland for a reported gas leak after receiving a 911 call at approximately 12:30.
Once on scene, officials detected a high level of natural gas in the building located at 141 Congress Street. As a result of the high readings, officials evacuated the building and the neighboring buildings as a precaution.
Portland Fire Department Spokesperson Tim Nangle stated that preliminary reports from the scene indicate a large quantity of heavy snow had accumulated on an exterior gas meter and caused the gas supply line to break. “This has been a busy couple of months for us with gas leaks. We are asking anyone who uses either natural gas or propane to ensure that the gas meter and surrounding piping is clear of snow and ice. This equipment is not designed to withstand the weight of snow or falling ice.”
Unitil is on the scene and has stopped the leak and is making repairs. As soon as the air quality in the buildings is safe, residents and occupants will be allowed to return. There are no reported injuries at this time and anticipates fire apparatus will be leaving the scene shortly.
