Rockport, Maine - Staff at Camden Hills Regional High School has released their plan for making up all the snow days that have added up this year. It has been a snowy winter an schools are finding ways to make up those days.
Here is the message from Camden Hills Regional High School on how snow days will be made up. This message is directed to parents and students.
Hello Camden Hills Regional High School Parents:
There has been a lot of concern about the number of snow days that we have had and how they will affect the end of the school year. The administration at the central office and high school have been working on a plan for about a month, but were waiting until now to get it approved because it is still a moving target. We don’t know if we will have more snow days, and if we do, it may affect this plan. But for now, we wanted to share our current thinking.
As it currently stands, we have had 9 snow days. Originally we built 5 snow days into the calendar, giving us a projected end date of June 19. That leaves 4 additional days of school to make up. Our task was to either add those days to the end of the school year and potentially move graduation, or to come up with an alternative way to make up 4 snow days. We all supported coming up with a plan to make up 4 days without adding all of them to the end of the year.
First a couple of facts:
The Commissioner of Education has made it very clear that no automatic waivers will be granted for any snow days. Districts can apply for a waiver to reduce the minimum number of schools days in a calendar, but the message is there has to be a more compelling reason than snow days.
We are not changing the date for Graduation. Graduation will still be held on June 5.
Plan to Make Up 4 School Days at CHRHS: (the SAD will have it’s own plan)
We will gain 1 day by turning the March 13 Workshop Day into a HALF student day. Students will arrive at school at their regular time and will be dismissed at 11:00 am. (The state counts a half day as a full student day.)
We will gain a 2nd day by turning the May 22 Workshop Day into a HALF student day. Students will arrive school at their regular time and will be dismissed at 11:00 am. (The state counts a half day as a full student day.)
We will gain a 3rd day by eliminating 1 student day. The state requires students to be in school for 175 days. CHRHS requires students to be in school for 177 days. By eliminating 1 of these extra days, we still exceed the state requirement.
To make up the 4th snow day, we will add 1 day to the end of the calendar. This means that the last day for underclassmen at CHRHS will be Saturday, June 20th…
YES, THIS IS A SATURDAY, BUT WE REALLY DID NOT WANT TO HAVE KIDS COME IN THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. June 20 will be the last day of finals, so only students with finals on the 20th will have to be here.
Please keep in mind that, weather wise, we are still not out of the woods. We could still have snow cancellations in March and even April. If we do, we may have to adjust the end date or determine other creative solutions to making up another day. For now, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact an administrator.
