Colby Men's hockey gets ready for Bowdoin game with win over Saint Anselm

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Colby College men’s hockey team scored early and late in the first period to take control on the way to a 5-1 victory over Saint Anselm College in the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic.

The Mules improve to 2-2 overall heading into Friday's big rivalry game with Bowdoin at 7 p.m. at Alfond Rink. Saint Anselm, led by former Colby head coach Jim Tortorella, dropped to 4-4.
 
Game Highlights
  *   Colby opened the game with a quick goal 1:18 into play. Andrew Reis (pictured) took a feed from Michael Rudolf and wristed a shot from the left point over the glove of Shane Joyce.
  *   Joyce made a pair of big breakaway saves moments later, stopping a two-on-none and a breakaway down the right from Kienan Scott.
  *   Rudolf doubled the Mules lead with 48 seconds remaining in the period, roofing a shot from mid-range from Phil Klitirinos.
  *   Twenty seconds into a second period power play for the Mules, passes connected from Scott to J.P. Schuhlen on the left post and back across the goal face to Cam MacDonald for the score made it 3-0.
  *   Ryan Spillane put the Hawks on the board with 3:25 left in the middle frame. Jeremy Carignan skated down the slot and slid a pass left to Spillane, who launched the puck top right corner.
  *   Scott rifled a shot wide right midway through the final period, with the puck rebounding off the boards and back to the left post. MacDonald cleaned up the rebound for a 4-1 Colby lead.
   *   Saint Anselm pulled its goalie for the final seconds of play and Nick O’Connor pulled the puck off the left boards and tallied an empty netter.

By the numbers
  *   Sean Lawrence stopped 27 shots for the Mules.
  *   Colby went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Hawks were 0-for-3.
