Blue Hill, Maine - Blue Hill Public Library will be hosting its second monthly series of free Art Adventures for adults and interested teens beginning Thursday, January 23rd at 7:00 PM with” The Steel Drum as Musical Instrument.”
Nigel Chase and members of Planet Pan Steel Drums will inaugurate this year’s series with an exciting interactive demonstration and introduction to the mysteries of coaxing music from steel drums.
Planet Pan has delighted, astonished and awed audiences young and old for over 20 years on the Blue Hill Peninsula and in locations all over the East Coast, playing at dances, competitions, and festivals, music ranging from traditional Trinidanian to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and the William Tell Overture by Giachino Rossini.
Nigel Chase, founder and artistic director of Planet Pan, was inspired as a young boy watching his father, Carl Chase, founder and director of the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band, hammering and tinkering with steel drums in his backyard in Brooksville. Nigel took off from there, fascinated by the possibilities of this easily available material to create beautiful music. Nigel went on to create opportunities for others to join in his passion, ultimately starting the Blue Hill-based Planet Pan. Frequent participants in occasions such as school parades, dances, festivals, fundraisers for countless worthy causes just for the asking, Planet Pan has added greatly to the rich culture of this community.
The event is free and everyone is welcome. For more information, call the Library at 374-5515.
