Rockland, Maine - During the Thanksgiving week, local yoga instructor Rachel Nixon and Trekkers are teaming up to celebrate community wellness and the spirit of giving back. Nixon will donate all profits from three yoga classes to the Thomaston-based non-profit Trekkers. The classes are open to the public by donation, and no previous yoga experience is required.
The class schedule is as follows: Monday, November 25 from 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. and Saturday, November 30 from 8:30-10 a.m. The studio is located on the first floor at 385 Main Street in Rockland (Thorndike Building). Space is limited to sixteen students per class, and registration will take place fifteen minutes before each class start time. Please bring a yoga mat (if you have one) and water. Students of all levels and abilities are invited, from beginners to advanced students.
Rachel Nixon, a certified Kripalu and Kundalini Instructor, has been teaching yoga and meditation in Rockland for six years. She works with students of all ages and participated as a mentor instructor for Fitness Treks, a program for high school girls in Trekkers, in 2012 and 2013. Profits from the Thanksgiving week yoga classes will go directly towards future Fitness Treks, the next of which is a boys program in the winter of 2014.
Nixon shared, “Trekkers is a vital, dynamic and inspiring local non-profit that nurtures the strengths and potential of teenagers here in the midcoast. Yoga celebrates the same values; it builds resiliency and inspires the realization of each person’s full potential.”
Trekkers is a non-profit, outdoor-based mentoring program that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. With community adult volunteers like Nixon, Trekkers is able to provide educational, experiential, and cross-cultural opportunities for young people in the RSU 13 community.
