Thunder strike back, take the finale from the Sea Dogs 9-7

Portland hits four home runs - two by Michael Almanzar

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (1-2) homered four times, but the Trenton Thunder (2-1) pounded out 15 hits in a 9-7 win over Portland on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.  The 'Dogs drop 2 of 3 to the Thunder, and continue their 6-game homestand tomorrow night against Reading.

1B Michael Almanzar homered twice for Portland, the second multi-homer game of his career. Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, Almanzar launched a homer over the center-field wall.  In the eighth, his big fly hit the top of the Portland Glass sign above the Maine Monster.

The Sea Dogs used back-to-back homers by Derrik Gibson (1st HR of his Double-A career) and Shannon Wilkerson to close the gap to 5-3 in the fifth.  Both teams scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but Branden Pinder worked out of a jam in the ninth inning, retiring the winning-run Tony Thomas on a foul-out to the catcher. Pinder pitched 1.1 innings to secure his first Double-A save.

Trenton left-hander Francisco Rondon worked five strong innings on four hits, three runs and six strikeouts to notch the win.  Portland's Kyle Kaminska suffered the loss in his Red Sox organizational debut, yielding nine hits and five runs over five innings.

Shortstop Stephen Drew played game three of his Major League Rehab Assignment, going 0-for-4 with a walk. Drew is expected to close out his rehab on Monday night with Portland. Daniel Bard pitched a perfect sixth, throwing 7 of 8 pitches for strikes.  The righty fanned one, and made two appearances for the 'Dogs in the series.

Miguel Celestino and Pete Ruiz made their Double-A debuts for Portland, working three innings combined.  Celestino allowed four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.

Trenton scored the first 5 runs of the contest, plating two in the second inning on RBI's from Casey Stevenson and Walter Ibarra.  The Thunder added a two-spot in the third and a run in the fourth.   Rob Segudin went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI to lead the Thunder offense.

Top-position prospect Xander Bogaerts had a strong game for the 'Dogs, going 2-for-5 with a run-scoring single in the seventh.  Ronald Bermudez knocked in Portland's final run, singling home Alberto Rosario in the eighth.
