Rockport, Maine - The Midcoast's roller derby league will field two teams in a dramatic Maine versus Maine versus Maine bout Saturday when the Rock Coast Rollers host the big finale to their home season.
Dozens of women from Portland's Maine Roller Derby and Bangor Roller Derby will roll into the Midcoast Recreation Center at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 for the first-ever all-Maine roller derby doubleheader -- two games in one night.
"This is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime event," said Zoƫ Foster, a.k.a. Roll Doll, of Rock Coast Rollers. "It's exciting to have the chance to host two teams from Maine. We anticipate fans from all around the state coming to support local roller derby, and can't wait to welcome our derby sisters to the Midcoast."
The first game starts at 6 p.m. with the Rock Coast Rollers taking on Bangor Derby. The Rollers will then field a second team to battle Maine Roller Derby.
The bout, called "The Maine Event" will showcase the growing sport. Maine Roller Derby kicked off the craze in 2006. Since then, three other leagues have popped up in the state.
"Roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world -- and that comes across loud and clear in Maine, where hundreds of women strap on skates each night after work to practice the sport. It takes endurance and guts and a competitive spirit to play derby," Doll said. The Rock Coast Rollers are an apprentice league with the Women's Flat Track Roller Derby Association, the governing body of women's roller derby.
The last home game of the season for the Rollers comes weeks after they took home a trophy from the All Eight On The Floor tournament in Massachusetts, where they stole the gold from nine other leagues around New England.
"This is our last bout of the season and we plan on it being a sold-out bout. We're so happy that we have been able to bring literally thousands of people to Rockport this summer. From our online ticket sales, it's clear people from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and from all around Maine are coming to this bout. It feels good to know that this will have a positive economic impact on our area."
Doors open for "The Maine Event" at 5 p.m. and the games begin at 6 p.m. The event is family friendly with free admission for children under 12. Handmade tickets from Yellowbird and Co are $5 dollars in advance and $7 dollars at the door. They are available at Good Tern Co-op, Rock City Coffee, and Atlantic Baking Co. and online at rockcoastrollers.weebly.com and www.brownpapertickets.com/event/263185.
