Limestone, Maine - The Military Heritage Center at the former Loring Air Force Base is gearing up for Loring A.F. B. Reunion 2012 on August 24-26. Several activities are being planned, including a BBQ lunch on Saturday and then a dinner and dance that night at the former NCO club on the base and a BBQ lunch the next day. This will be the first time those who lived and worked at Loring have reunited since the base closed nearly two decades ago.
"We are excited to welcome Veterans of Loring, family, military brats of Loring, civilians, civilian contractors, and anyone who ever served, worked, was affiliated or is just interested in the base," said Cuppy Johndro, event co-chairwoman. "Registrations have already come in from all over the country including Colorado, Texas, South Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Canada and all around New England. So, I guess it was high time we had a reunion."
The Loring Military Heritage Center will be open for visitors along with the flight line, weapons storage area, and hangars.
For more than five decades, Loring was a Strategic Air Command military base and crucial to the country's defense due to its proximity to the European Continent. Over the years, bombers, fighters, and supply planes came and went through Loring in support of the country’s actions throughout the Cold War era, the Vietnam War, and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The base closure in 1994 had a major economic impact on the area, with the loss of 10,000 people who were stationed at the base as well as 10,000 civilian jobs supported by the base.
Johndro added, "There is not a lot to see that you used to see but there is still that connection we have to the place and to each other and that’s why we want to have this reunion.”
