UMaine Softball Starts 2016 With Victory Over IPFW

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Rachel Carlson, Felicia Lennon and Meghan Royle each tallied a pair of hits to lead the University of Maine softball team (1-0) to a 7-4 season-opening victory over Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (3-16) on Monday afternoon.

Lennon doubled and added a pair of RBI and a run scored to her impressive season debut. Seven different Black Bears scored a run in the victory and Maine played perfect, errorless defense.

Molly Flowers received the opening day start in the circle and recorded the win. Flowers tossed 2.0 innings of no-hit, shutout ball with three strikeouts. Nikki Misner came on in relief, going a pair of innings while surrendering three hits and one run. Erin Bogdanovich went two innings, giving up four hits, and three runs. Annie Kennedy picked up her first save of the season, locking down the victory with one inning of no-hit work.

The Black Bears jumped on top of IPFW early with a run in the first and three more in the second.
Lennon drove in the first Maine run of the year with a double to center, scoring Erika Leonard.

Maine added to its lead in the bottom of the second, beginning with Sarah Coyne coming in to score on a single from Maddie Moore. Meghan Royle followed with a single and advanced to second on an error, which allowed Moore to come home. Maine took a 4-0 lead when Carlson's groundout to second brought Royle in from third.

IPFW got on the board with a run in the top of the third but Maine answered with three in the home half of the fourth.

Lennon drove in her second run of the day with a fourth inning single to plate Carlson. Janelle Bouchard drove in her first run of the year with a single to left, bringing in Lennon. Alyssa Derrick drove in the seventh run of the day for Maine when her first career hit brought in Bouchard.
IPFW was able to get three back in the top of the sixth.

Kennedy came on for the seventh and shut down the Mastodons in order, securing Maine's first win of the season.

The Black Bears are back in action tomorrow when they meet Penn University for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
