Eagles Swept by Kohawks, 10-1, 5-4

Auburndale, Fla. – Husson baseball team open up their 87th season with a pair of loss to Coe College on Monday morning. The Eagles dropped game one by a score of 10-1 and the second 5-4 on day one of their spring trip.

Game 1: Coe 10, Husson 1

Husson (0-2) scored in the top of the first on a single to centerfield by JT Whitten driving in Ryan Rebar with the first run of the game. Coe (2-1) scored all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first on route to a 10-1 victory in the opener.

Michael Redmond, Craig Konrardy, Grant Henning and Alec Zwanziger led the Kohawks with two
hits apiece. Redmond and Henning each scored twice. Henning and Zwanziger both drove in three runs, while Konrardy drove in a pair. Thomas Schaedel went the distance on the mound, striking out nine and walking two. He gave up an earned run on seven hits.

The Eagles were led by Whitten who went a perfect three for three at the plate with a double and a RBI. Robert Graff picked up the loss for Husson. He allowed nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks over four innings of work. Ben Holmes pitched two innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out two batters in relief of Graff.

Game 2: Coe 5, Husson 4

The Kohawks stayed hot in the first inning of game two with four runs in the first inning. Redmond singled up the middle to plate Kevin DeLaney for the first run. Henning then singled through the right side, as he drove in Redmond. Andrew Brierton and Henning would score on a single to right field by Ben Larison.

Husson cut the lead in half in the third on a RBI single by Alex Chapman that plated Zach Sugar and a RBI infield single by Whitten that scored Chapman with an unearned run. Christian Corneil would score on a sacrifice fly by Sugar in the bottom of the fourth making it a one-run game. Coe pushed the lead back to two runs in the sixth, as Colton Knox singled up the middle to plate Larison. The Eagles plated an unearned run by Chapman on a single by Rebar in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough in the 5-4 Kohawk victory.

Larison led the Kohawks with three hits, while Konrardy, Henning and Knox had two hits apiece. Larison also drove in a pair of runs. David Keaton picked up his first collegiate win, striking out two and walking four in four innings. Keaton gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits. Lucas Robbins earned a save in three innings, striking out one and giving up an unearned run on two hits.

Chapman, Rebar, Whitten, Sam Huston, Sugar, Cam Archer each had a hit apiece for the Eagles while Chapman scored two runs. Corneil record his first stolen base of the season to extend his stolen base steak without being thrown out to 15. Whitten moved into 19th in school history with his 85th career run batted in and 24th with his 134th career hit. Ben Walls pitched six innings to pick up the lost while allowing five runs (all earned) on 12 hits and striking out five Kohawks batters in his first outing of the 2016. Steven Hanscom pitched one inning of shutout relief, allowing just two batters to each base one on a hit and one a walk.

The Kohawks return to action on Tuesday morning, as they face Oglethorpe. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Winter Haven, Fla. while the Eagles return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon, as the face Mount St. Joseph at 12:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
