Rockland, Maine - The Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., Rockland, is offering a free screening of OUT OF AFRICA (1985) to its members on Tuesday, March 31 at 7pm. All current Strand Theatre members, as well as any person becoming a member prior to this screening, are invited to attend.
The epic romantic drama OUT OF AFRICA, directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and Klaus Maria Brandauer, won seven Academy Awards and was nominated in a further four categories. The story of the film is drawn from the life and writings of Danish author Isak Dinesen. For convenience's sake, Karen (Streep) has married Baron Bor Blixen-Flecke (Brandauer). In 1914, the Baron moves himself and his wife to a plantation in Nairobi, then leaves Karen to her own devices as he returns to his womanizing and drinking. Soon, Karen has fallen in love with charming white hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Redford), who prefers a no-strings relationship. A woman who prides herself on her independence, Blixen finds herself unhappily in thrall to the aloof man.
The theater, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, became a non-profit in January 2014 and is operated by Friends of the Strand Theatre. Memberships, as well as grants, sponsorships and fund-raising efforts, help pay the operating expenses supporting the wide range of cultural and educational programming the theater offers to the community.
Strand Members should present their membership cards at the box office to receive ticket(s) for admission and a coupon for a free popcorn and fountain drink. Friend and Fan levels receive one free admission; Supporter, Sustainer, Patron, Benefactor, Star, and Superstar levels receive two admissions.
The Strand Theatre was built by Ida and Joseph Dondis in 1923 and operated by the Dondis family for over 60 years. The theater was bought by a multiplex in 2000, but remained undeveloped until it was purchased by Matt and Ellen Simmons, long-time summer residents of Rockport, in 2005. The Simmons family extensively renovated the theater, returning it as closely as possible to its original 1920’s character while assuring that the building would also be a comfortable, state-of-the-art, modern facility. In 2014, Ellen Simmons gifted the theater to the newly formed Friends of the Strand Theatre, Inc, a 501c3 non-profit.
