Photo Treks 2013, “People, Places, and Culture: Exploring Diversity in Maine,” is the culminating photographic work of eight talented high school artists and five adult mentors. Combining cultural diversity, digital photography and youth mentoring, students in this year’s Photo Treks program examined Social Justice through the lens of a camera during a five day trip last October.
While experiencing a variety of communities, cultures and traditions within the state of Maine, students were encouraged to expand their understanding while capturing digital images that depicted their experience. The goal of the Photo Treks program is to cultivate a new appreciation for photography, to broaden students’ knowledge of their home state, and create a deeper respect for places and cultures outside their own community. Photo Treks 2013 was funded in part by a grant from the K2 Family Foundation.
This year’s Photo Treks Gallery Opening will be held at the new location of the Jonathan Frost Gallery at 279 Main Street in Rockland, next to the Park Street Grille. In addition to donating space for the opening, the Jonathan Frost Gallery is generously donating its usual commission to the Photo Treks program. Students’ work will be for sale, both at the opening and throughout the month of March. Half of the proceeds will go to the artist; the other half will support the Photo Treks program.
“Trekkers is excited to collaborate with local artists and to introduce our students to the vibrant art community in this area. We are so grateful to Jonathan Frost and the other local artists who have helped make this program happen,” said Trekkers Executive Director Don Carpenter in a press release.
Trekkers is a nonprofit mentoring organization that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, adventure-based education and community service. The organization currently serves 200 students from the communities of RSU #13.
