Winner will qualify to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition near Washington D.C
Bangor, Maine - Husson University will host the final local spelling bee competition for Penobscot County on Saturday, March 23rd at 1 pm at Husson’s Gracie Theatre. Thirty-four students representing various schools throughout Penobscot County will compete to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition, which will take place this May in the Washington, D.C. area. The event held at Husson is free and open to the public.
Two students qualified from each school for the Penobscot County Spelling Bee. As the sponsor, Husson will provide the winner and a parent or guardian with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Washington, D.C. area and will be one of two students that will represent the State of Maine in the national competition.
The Penobscot County Spelling Bee is an elimination-style competition held in front of an audience and a panel of judges. Husson University’s Associate Professor of Elementary Education Dr. Sandip Wilson will serve as the pronouncer, responsible for providing the words for the students.

This event is organized by our School of Education and is in keeping with our mission to work closely with area schools to support academic endeavors for their students.” states Provost Lynne Coy-Ogan.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee’s website states that it is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, and South Korea. Their overarching goal is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
