Waldoboro cabin offers summer getaway to support conservation

Waldoboro, Maine - Plan now to get away this summer to a remote shorefront cabin on a wildlife sanctuary, and support a charity in the process.  Pemaquid Watershed Association (PWA) is now taking reservations for mid-May through September stays at its cabin on the Osborn Finch Wildlife Sanctuary on Dutch Neck in Waldoboro, just a short drive from most points in Maine.

The Wildlife Sanctuary includes 2 acres of grassy field, 9 acres of forest, and 300 feet of tidal frontage on the shore of the Muscongus River.  A stone’s throw from the cabin is a pocket beach.  At low tide, clam flats are revealed, and, downriver from the preserve, a colony of harbor seals makes their summer home. Numerous birds, such as black-back and herring gulls, bald eagles, kingfishers, terns and great blue heron, may be seen flying overhead or fishing along the riverbank.  The large windows of the cabin provide panoramic views up and down the Medomak River.  Jean Twomey, a South Portland resident, has stayed at the Osborn Finch Cabin the past few summers. “We had no idea how wonderful it would be until we made our way through the woods that first time to find the cozy cabin right on the water's edge. We brought kayaks and enjoyed the luxury of tying up our boats on the rocks out in front, exploring the neighboring islands and coves, occasionally stopping to picnic or take a swim. We brought plenty of good food, books and an eye for starlit nights, easygoing mornings, the sights and sounds of lobster boats, ospreys and an amazing variety of other shore birds. We felt so lucky knowing that someone left this beautiful place so that we can all have a chance to feel like Thoreau by the sea.”

It is a rustic getaway whose charm is most enjoyed by those who love the quiet solitude of nature and do not mind being without common creature comforts for a few days, as it has no electricity or running water.  Despite Spartan amenities, it is a comfortable and relaxing getaway, with a well-kept indoor composting toilet, simple yet charming furnishings, and serene surroundings.

Although the cabin is available only on a summer reservation basis, the Osborn Finch Wildlife Sanctuary trails are open to the public year-round.  The cabin is reserved on a donation basis.  Proceeds from use of the cabin support PWA’s land and waters stewardship programs.  To reach the preserve from Rte. 1 Waldoboro, turn onto Rte. 32 South, go 2.7 miles and turn east onto Dutch Neck Road.  To reach the preserve from Damariscotta, travel the Biscay Road to Rt. 32 north in Bremen and drive 6.3 miles, turning right onto Dutch Neck Road.  Once on Dutch Neck Road, go left at the fork and then travel 2.5 miles.  The preserve’s sign and grass parking area are on the left.  The cabin is about a 1/5-mile walk over a preserve trail from the parking area.

PWA is a volunteer-based, membership-supported non-profit organization with a mission to conserve the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula through land and water stewardship and education. FMI, call 207-563-2196 or visit http://www.pemaquidwatershed.org/cabin.html

Medomak River Community Market Re-opening March 1; Coincides with Women’s History Month

Waldoboro, Maine - The Medomak River Community Market (MRCM)-a cooperative market in the heart of Waldoboro Village- will be reopening Friday March 1. Members have spent the last two months cleaning and reorganizing the market for your enjoyment. They have also created a special “nook” to honor Women’s History Month.

The market caries a wide variety of handmade, Maine made products.  Just a sampling would include bees wax candles, hand-made soaps, beautiful and practical pottery, cards, photos, jewelry, children’s clothing, hand spun and dyed wools, felted items, stained glass items, and up-cycled building salvage materials.

The market also has a wall of thoughtfully selected used books, penny candy, children’s art supplies, and collectibles-often from or about Maine. During the growing season, a few farmers members drop off their extras- beautiful flowers, tasty garlic, garden grown tomatoes and what not.

Did you know March is Women’s History Month? In honor of this, the Market will provide books and CD’s that explore women’s lives and issues for individuals to browse and/or borrow. Find out about the
“Not so well behaved women that made history.”  Donations will be accepted on behalf of New Hope for Women, a local organization working to end domestic violence .

The market is still looking to round out their selection of products so if you are an artist or crafter looking for a place to sell product- come on in and check us out. We would be happy to discuss your options. Would you like to volunteer in the store? Or help out with a special project like building a float for the Waldoboro parade? Perhaps offer some gardening help to spruce up the area around the store? Business management or marketing advice is always valued!  By helping the market, you are helping rebuild the vibrancy of downtown Waldoboro. We are looking forward to continuing to serve our community in 2013 and look forward to your participation- contact us at medomakrivercm@gmail.com.

Calling all Artists, Crafter, and Volunteers

Waldoboro, Maine - The Medomak River Community Market (MRCM) will be reopening March 1 after a 2 month winter break, and is looking for a few good crafters and artists to round out the selection of Maine made products found in the cooperative.

For those unfamiliar with the cooperative model, MRCM is a small, non-profit, member-owned business. MRCM currently has 10 working members, a number of consigners, and some great volunteers!  MRCM is managed collectively, and all members have a vote in decisions made at monthly meetings. The cooperative works on a consignment basis with a percentage of selling price to be returned to the individual producer-member and a percentage retained by the cooperative organization to pay overhead such as heat, rent, water, liability insurance etc.

Why become part of a cooperative? Arts and crafts cooperatives are used by artists and craftspeople to market their product and maximize their sales income. The percentage returned to the individual producing-member varies from 60-90% dependent on the level of participation of the member.  This is often a higher return than one would receive selling products wholesale. The artist/crafter also has much more say in how their products are presented and displayed.

A jury system is used to evaluate new work before membership is offered to a new artist. Current members of the cooperative will review products for quality, originality, and appropriateness. The next cooperative meeting will be held Thursday February 21, 2013 at MRCM - 17 Friendship Street , Waldoboro Village at 6:30. Come on in and see what we are all about. If you are considering membership and would like your product juried at this meeting, please contact us ahead of time at medomakrivercm@gmail.com for more information and an application.

'Aida' Auditions at the Waldo Theatre

'Aida' Auditions at the Waldo Theatre

Waldoboro, Maine - The downtown Waldo Theatre will hold auditions for its summer musical "Aida" Sunday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the theater, Main Street/Route 220.

Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida" is a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

The show is being directed by Melissa Hearth with musical direction by Sean Fleming. Heidi Sawyer, a sailmaker of no small renown, will be designing the set. Show dates are Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, July 15 at 3 p.m.; and Thursday through Saturday, July 19 through 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Auditioners should be high school age or older. Those auditioning for Aida, Amneris or Radames must sing one of the songs from the show featuring the part they are auditioning for. Aida and Radames auditioners should be familiar with "Written in the Stars" because they will be asked to sing the duet either at the audition or during callbacks, if such are necessary. Those not singing a piece from the show should come prepared with sheet music.  Anyone auditioning for a role featuring a solo must sing at auditions with musical accompaniment (Fleming on piano).

The cast consists of three leads and five supporting roles with a busy vocal/dance ensemble (lines too) of 13 or more. Those who wish to audition but cannot make either of these dates should contact Hearth to make special arrangements by sending email to melissa@thewaldo.org.

Osborn Finch cabin offers summer getaway

Osborn Finch cabin offers summer getaway

Waldoboro, Maine - Why not support a non-profit conservation group by staying in a bayside cabin nestled in the midst of a wildlife sanctuary just a short drive from most points in Midcoast Maine?  The Pemaquid Watershed Association’s (PWA) cabin on the Osborn Finch Wildlife Sanctuary on Dutch Neck in Waldoboro is open for the public to enjoy on a reservation basis from mid-May through September.

The Wildlife Sanctuary includes 2 acres of grassy field, 9 acres of forest, and 300 feet of tidal frontage on the shore of Muscongus Bay.  At low tide, the Medomak River clam flats are revealed, and, downriver from the preserve, a colony of harbor seals make their summer home. Numerous birds, such as black-back and herring gulls, bald eagles, kingfishers, terns and great blue heron, may be seen flying overhead or fishing along the riverbank.  Past cabin guests, Pat and Ty Tison of Brownfield, ME, said, “The more places we travel, the more special and precious we realize that the Osborn Finch cabin and sanctuary are, thanks to the PWA!”  Jean Twomey, a South Portland resident, has stayed at the Osborn Finch Cabin the past few summers.

The cabin boasts panoramic views up and down the Medomak River.  It is a rustic getaway whose charm is probably most enjoyed by those who love the quiet solitude of nature and do not mind being without common creature comforts for a few days, as it has no electricity or running water.  Despite Spartan amenities, it is a comfortable and relaxing getaway, with a well-kept indoor composting toilet, simple yet charming furnishings, and serene surroundings.   See details at  http://www.pemaquidwatershed.org/Documents/cabin_sample_use_agreement.pdf.

The cabin is a short walk over a preserve trail from the parking area.

PWA is a volunteer-based, membership-supported non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula through land and water stewardship and education. FMI, call 207-563-2196 or visit www.pemaquidwatershed.org/cabin.html.
